Inkstones (or ink slabs) are vessels to ground ink with an ink stick until the desired level of ink intensity is reached. Whilst a plain inkstone the size of a hand works perfectly fine, there are inkstones made of particular stones with decorative carving, and can cost thousands of dollars.
Inksticks are a solid form of ink and are made from oil-soot or wood-soot and resin, sometimes they have a pleasant smell, such as sandalwood, pine, or herbs.
